this was an interesting and engaging thriller although it wasn't fast-paced like it claimed. i would argue the first half was hella slow and then it picked up like mad in the second half. i loved the discussion of race, diversity hiring, representation and corporate culture in America but i think these issues could have been dealt with in an more nuanced manner. Morris could have explained in more detail why exactly Ellice was hiding so much of her past from her friends, colleagues and bosses. There could have been more time spent exploring her childhood rather than going for the shock reveals of the abuse, murder and various plots . i think the twists were honestly quite predictable but they all served a proper purpose in the storytelling and plot design. i do agree that for a lawyer who was supposedly intelligent af and brilliant this woman made so many stupid decisions - from simple things like lying to the cops, speaking to police without counsel to literally running from a dead body when there's CCTV and entry logs, etc. this was a page turning murder mystery but it didn't really keep me on my feet that much. i thought her entire relationship with her brother was VERY under explored and would have given her a deeper, more emotional side to help readers connect with her better.
