Dangerous Refuge by Elizabeth Lowell

3.0

In Dangerous Refuge, Tanner returns to his childhood home after his uncle Lorne unexpectedly dies. He’s a LA cop and once he arrives, something about the death is suspicious to him. He believes his uncle had been murdered, possibly for his land. Enter Shaye, a representative from the local land conservation society who had an agreement with Tanner’s uncle for the land. An agreement Tanner’s uncle called off just before his death. Tanner and Shaye have a rocky first meeting but are soon inseparable as they search together for clues about Lorne’s death. Things get dangerous. Shaye and Tanner grow closer to each other and also to the identity of the killer.

This started off with me feeling not such good feelings about Tanner. He was rude and kind of a jerk. But he mellowed a bit and became focused on wooing Shaye and finding his uncle’s killer. Shaye was pretty stubborn and head strong. She had the baggage of a bad marriage behind her and was a little leary of starting something up with Tanner. They went from instant hate to instant lust that turned into a pretty slow burn towards the inevitable. By the end, I was convinced they belonged together.

The mystery wasn’t great. It was a town full of greedy liars who caused all the trouble. But there was an element of suspense throughout the whole book to go along with the romance.
