So, this book wasn't what I was expecting. I'd found it when looking for "Howl's Moving Castle" style book recs. So I was expecting sassy heroine (which granted, fits), and funny nonsense/fantasy magical realism.
I got the nonsense/fantasy magical realism, but def not the "funny" part of it.

I probably would have appreciated that book more if the rec and cover/summary hadn't given me false expectations (which is mostly on me, because I don't look up much info about books before reading them, I don't like too much info). The author wrote in the afterword that it was a book for children, but darker than usual, and yeah, pretty much. And since I don't do dark...

Anyway, still a very good story. I had trouble with the 30% mark (a bit slow) and then 50 % mark because it was giving me
barcode people/genocide to come
, but the other half of the book was read in one go. The ending was a bit bittersweet, which, again, not my thing.

So yeah, good story, fascinating idea, but not in my own preferences.
