Brave Irene by William Steig

This was on a list of not-to-be-missed children's books, and I'd missed it, so that was my motivation for reading it!

I don't get the love. It's a tale of a young girl who (in my opinion) does something stupid, and dangerous, and then kind of saves the day completely accidentally. I wasn't a huge fan of the author's Sylvester and the Magic Pebble--hope I got the name correct--either, so perhaps we're just on different wave lengths. I didn't see anything particularly charming about it, the illustrations weren't so amazing that the story didn't matter, and the prose styling didn't dazzle. My seven year old self would have thought "that's kind of a dumb story," and I can't say I disagree with him.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!
