Wow. “Spare” was absolutely fantastic. I don’t know what I was expecting but it was not this. Based on the media coverage, I was expecting an explosive “tell-all” trashing everyone and everything and instead it was a heart-wrenching, exposed and raw retelling of a very damaged man who has clearly gone to A LOT of therapy.

I TORE through this book and it is absolutely a testament to the choice to organize the book into three parts, Harry’s childhood, military service, and Meghan. Within those parts, there are very short chapters which are essentially individual stories told in chronological order. Harry, and his ghostwriter, J. R. Moehringer, did an excellent job keeping the reading engaged and moving quickly through Harry’s life.

Although Harry’s family is not left unscathed, from the very first pages to the end the “capital M” Media is clearly poised as the villain in Harry’s story. Unlike most villains in most books, Harry doesn’t even declare victory at the end, because it’s clear that he blames the Media for driving his family apart. Not to say he doesn’t blame his family for their many indiscretions, many of these decisions are framed as being made because of how his family wants to remain the Media’s good graces. He doesn’t let his family off the hook for these decisions, he does recognize that just like him, they are a product of a system not entirely within their control

One thing that is absolutely clear from this memoir, and from any interview I’ve ever seen of them, he LOVES Meghan. Just loves her. If my husband ever writes about me, I hope its half as lovely. The most touching parts too me however were about his military service and how he clearly loved being a solider and all the responsibility he feels around continuing to support his causes relating to veterans.
