I saw this on so many best books of 2022 lists and while I did really enjoy it, it didn't quite live up to that reputation for me. I liked Zevin's writing and I was hooked the whole way through, although it did feel like the pace slowed down in the second half. I found the characters very interesting, partly because they are quite difficult and sometimes unlikeable. I was often frustrated by their selfish choices, which didn't necessarily affect my enjoyment but maybe did make me feel less connected to them. I've seen a lot of people say that you don't have to love video games to enjoy this and that's definitely true because I'm only an occasional gamer. However I think lifelong gamers would understand every reference and enjoy it on another level.
