Spinning Silver, by Naomi Novik

adventurous emotional mysterious medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

there's a pace and logic to Novik's books that is really unique and special - she's great at writing characters into corners only to have them find interesting ways to get out of them, giving the reader just enough of a story's rules to have twists feel both surprising and inevitable, and joining seemingly disparate plot threads in ways that feel satisfying instead of too neat or cute.
