They Called Us Exceptional: And Other Lies That Raised Us by Prachi Gupta

dark emotional reflective sad tense medium-paced

4.5

While I found the second-person perspective awkward at times, this book is extremely compelling, imbued with foreboding as the author slowly reveals the traumatic events she and her family have experienced. I didn’t know anything about the author beforehand, and I’m glad I didn’t google her, as that would have given away some of the events. It’s almost *too* personal at times, and I wonder whether some of the content should have been discussed in therapy but not included in the book. Still, the author is remarkably brave to share so much of her experiences. Although it’s only January, I know this will be one of the best books I read this year.
