Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs by Jamie Loftus

dark emotional funny informative lighthearted medium-paced

5.0

HOLY COW, where do I even begin?

I first came to Jamie Loftus’s work through her deep dives on Chuck E Cheese and appearances on Podcast: The Ride. My husband came to her from her work on Behind the Bastards, a history based podcast. This is incredibly on brand for each of us.

There’s a lot to say about the good and bad of para-social relationships in a post podcast, social media ridden world but Loftus is one of those people who the first time I heard her speak I thought “thank God someone else’s brain is broke like mine is.”

My husband and I were both so excited about this book we each pre-ordered our own copy because we knew neither of us could wait for the other to finish it. And y’all, it’s just that good. I’ve gotten a lot of questions, what being out in public reading a book with the words RAW DOG blazed across the cover (mind you, in an era when many women are openly reading smut and I’m proud of everyone one of them). When people ask it sounds so cheesy but I have to say “it’s about hotdogs…but it’s about sooo much more.”

History. Memoir. Travelogue. A look at a country grappling with a national medical emergency and labor shortage. The politics of owning a small business. What it’s like to be a woman in the 21st century. Loftus hits it all. Like a more crass millennial Mary Roach, even if you aren’t interested in the subject matter you will be interested in this book.
