The Writer's Practice: Building Confidence in Your Nonfiction Writing by John Warner

5.0

As a public school teacher, it is difficult to stray from the required curriculum. Often, there is an uncomfortable juxtaposition of emotions: feeling like you need to teach something different because what you are doing is not good for your students and fear that by not following the curriculum, you will get in trouble.

Many teachers do not veer from curricula because it takes time to find better alternatives. Teachers have no time. It takes experience to evaluate whether a particular set of materials will be useful when teaching a concept. Gaining this necessary expertise takes time (and sometimes money to invest in education); teachers have neither of these things in abundance.

The Writer's Practice is an excellent resource for educators who are dissatisfied with current writing pedagogy and want something different. Warner has two decades+ worth of experience both as a professional writer and a teacher of writing. This book is full of excellent writing experiences that you can begin using in your classroom immediately!

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve either their writing instruction or personal practice of writing. If you are looking for a deeper look into Warner's writing philosophy, as a bonus, I also recommend Warner's Why They Can't Write: Killing the Five-Paragraph Essay and Other Necessities.
