Tristes Tropiques by Claude Lévi-Strauss

4.0

Alternately fascinating and mind-numbingly self-indulgent. A real mixed bag of brilliance mixed with inane tedium. The most interesting bits were obviously about the Brazilian expeditions. The digressions into South Asia and elsewhere, with dark discourses about Islam, etc., just seemed off and muddle-headed. Still, worthwhile to see Levi-Strauss chronicling his journey toward becoming an anthropologist.
