Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide by John Cleese
5.0
This was a very thoughtful gift from my dad upon my graduation. I’m going to keep it forever not only because of the sweet note my dad wrote to me in it, but because it is really full of interesting tips and perspectives on creativity. I like the approach and I agree with Cleese: no one is incapable of creativity and creativity presents itself in all kinds of art and science and math and history because creativity is one of our most basic human instincts.
Cleese’s “hare brain” and “tortoise mind” especially were helpful to think about and I want to see if I can be more mindful when chasing that creative spark and brewing up new ideas. This is a very quick read and I can definitely see myself picking it up every now and then to remind me of memories and advice I’ve received from my writing professors and amazing classmates at school.
