Among Thieves by M.J. Kuhn

adventurous dark mysterious tense medium-paced

3.5

The world building was extremely difficult to follow. I found myself wondering what distinctions there are between the different people, their different beliefs etc. however was disappointed when all we ever received was vague details which meant nothing and whether each region was north or south. There wasn’t enough scheming for the overall heist part for my liking, it was all very rushed and felt unsatisfying when they succeeded. They really only succeeded out of plot convenience rather than the criminal genius i was expecting. while this might be a nit pick it’s very similar to six of crows, which would be a compliment, if it was able to match those expectations. the betrayal aspect made got me excited to read it fell flat, due to the character not being fleshed out enough for it to make any real impact.

The overall writing is compelling and definitely has potential to become a good story. overall this book was fun but i definitely struggled picking it back up to continue.

side note: it also doesn’t help that i accidentally read the second book first and completely spoiled this experience for myself.
