Marlborough Man by Alan Carter

Nick Chester is the local police sergeant in the small town of Havelock somewhere between Nelson and Blenheim at the top of South Island New Zealand. He's there because he is a former undercover police officer from Sunderland in the UK and is now hiding out with his family from those he put away. His old enemies turning up at anytime is a constant threat at the back of his mind.

But police work still goes on and when the body of a young boy who has been brutalized is found behind a fence a murder investigation gets underway. However, he is only the local police and the investigation is handled by officers from Wellington. Nick finds it hard to not get involved and soon lands himself in trouble, from more than one direction.

I really enjoyed this book, the location, the story, the characters and the culture. It's a refreshing read and would be great if this was the beginning of new series.
