Spqr I: The Kings Gambit by John Roberts

4.0

April 2018 review-

Wow, I hadn't even realized that I'd already listened to this book (I guess the audible app barfing my data was useful after all), but I quite liked it. Maybe it's because I was more in the mood for this book?

Fictional Decius Caecilius Metellus, a Roman citizen and office holder, is living in Rome populated with real historical figures - he even interacts with them and makes them part of his investigations. This was a really fun little murder-mystery and I will be following up with the series to see if they continue the same style - I quite liked it, and Simon Vance did a great job of narrating (as always).

On it's face, I should love this book - it is the first of a series that takes place in Roman late-Republic/early-Empire times. It's a mystery/thriller with all kinds of fun Roman politics thrown in, but I just couldn't get into it or really enjoy it.
