Although it was inevitable that there would be things related to colonialism, racism, sexism, etc. in a book set in this time period, I feel it was handled quite well in that the author found ways to have her characters participate in/interact with these things, yet also not make them seem acceptable. I think there are a few things I might have handled differently, but overall it was quite good.
