This is the most 2021 book I've ever read. The writing is more concerned with being cleverly referential than earnest, and I wasn't very fond of the introduction of sci-fi elements (although that's just my own personal preference). I usually admire writers who aren't afraid of an unhappy ending, but because the central conflict wasn't very well developed, the ending just felt more anti-climactic than resonant and meaningful.
