The characters were pretty flat. There wasn't anything to root for or to hope for - Clarke and Rush both felt distant, and there wasn't any way to connect to them. The world-building was promising, with interesting twists and turns, but ultimately, it was also flat because it was underdeveloped. There are some good ideas here; I wish the author would have taken more time to explore them and show us the world she was trying to build.
