The Striker was the first sports romance book I’ve read, and I don’t know how any other one could even compare, except maybe the sequel! ;)
Ana Huang has done it again with this poignant and powerful novel about star football (soccer) player Asher Donovan, the reckless, seemingly perfect guy who always got whatever he wanted and had everything, that is until Scarlett DuBois waltzed into his life.
The book opens with Asher having transferred from Holchester, his previous football club, to play for Blackcastle — Holchester’s biggest rival. This decision spurred a lot of frustration and anger, especially with his father, a die-hard Holchester fan and practically a second coach for Asher.
As soon as Asher joins the team he immediately butts heads with their captain Vincent, which costs them a league championship. As punishment for their behavior, Vincent and Asher are sent off to train at RAB (Royal Accademy of Ballet) to learn how to work cohesively as a team. Though when Vincent has to leave to take care of his father, Asher and Scarlett are forced to confront the growing feelings blossoming between them.
Asher’s love of the game and ultimately his entire worldview is put to the test. Scarlett struggles to deal with demons from a past accident and how to make a future in spite of that. Regardless, the connection that happens between them will be more powerful than anything either of them have ever known.
