As a mixed race Asian American, a fellow daughter of an Asian mom and white dad, this book hit so close to home. For anyone grieving a loss, Michelle’s descriptions of the throes of grief will resonate, but particularly with people who may have had a difficult relationship with their parent.
For anyone ready to make fun of 2nd gen Asian Americans, our honest reflections on smelly lunches, cut fruit, language barriers…. This is the book to put into context the struggle of being mixed race, latching onto other people to hold our identity, not being accepted or fitting in anywhere. There are many experiences of being Asian American, but being mixed, this one rings the truest to me, and means so much to be put into words and proliferated for the world to read in Michelle’s words.
This book has me agonizing about the identity crisis I will inevitably have about my Asianness when my own mother dies, but if that happens, I will take solace in rereading this book. Thank you Michelle for sharing your vulnerability and candor as you relieved navigating these times in your memoir. It means so much, especially to other Asian girls caught in the same struggles.
