The Guard by Kiera Cass

4.0

First things first, if I bought into the whole "team thing," I'd definitely be Team Maxon, 100%. I like Aspen just fine I suppose, but Maxon had my heart from the very beginning.

That being said, I've finished The Selection and The Elite, so I decided to read The Prince and The Guard before starting The One. The Prince, of course, only made me fall even more in love with Maxon. But I wasn't sure what The Guard would do in changing my perspective about Aspen.

I guess I would just say I feel pretty much the same about him. I don't think it revealed any new information about his character that I didn't already know. I suppose I'm relieved about certain things.
SpoilerLike when he tells America that Maxon isn't a good guy, it was nice to see that he really believed it as opposed to only saying it because he wanted to manipulate America into being with him over Maxon.
But for the most part, I liked him just fine before this book, and I like him just fine after. But Maxon will always be #1 to me.

Like The Prince, The Guard definitely isn't a necessity to the series. But if you like the series, and especially if you really like Aspen, it's a good read. It's not a new story, rather a retelling of parts of The Elite from Aspen's point of view. I like the change of perspective. I think it's interesting.

All in all, if you like the series and especially if you like Aspen, I think you'll enjoy The Guard.
