The Wall by Marlen Haushofer

5.0

Brilliant throughout. Such a rich, unexpected treasure with an original voice narrating a familiar theme. Taking the 'last person left alive' premise and somehow producing a novel of subtlety, originality and wisdom. Unapologetically, uncompromisingly this presents a woman's perspective on the catastrophic event and the devastating reality of survival. This is a momentous book that makes you realise how rare it is to find such a clear, direct female voice defined not by romance or her relationships with others but standing, withstanding and speaking for and about herself.
