Laddie: A True Blue Story, by Gene Stratton-Porter

3.0

I'm sure I'm not the only one looking through the shelves of free e-books and pulling out ones that look interesting. I'd recently read Girl of the Limberlost, and that was good enough to inspire me to pick up the other Gene Stratton-Porters. the story line isn't much here--boy meets rich girl and in a surprise twist it turns out that he's every bit her equal so it's all perfect that they get married--but there are some wonderful descriptions that make this book worth picking up. There are loving descriptions of both the land--fields and fence corners and streams worth wading--but also wonderful descriptions of country life--particularly weddings and holidays--that explain some of the current nostalgia for this idealized self-reliance of the past.
