A View Across the Rooftops by Suzanne Kelman

I know many people don’t like reading about this period of history but I find it fascinating that in a time of much horror and terror the human spirit and actions only grow stronger.

This is a powerful story, which was influenced by the real life actions of someone who deliberately contracted a deadly disease just to get medicine for the Jewish person he was hiding.

It shows the brutality of life for the Dutch people of Amsterdam, but at the same time shows the friendship, sacrifice and love which still existed through such a harrowing time.

Written in such a moving way this is a book which has left the me sad that the characters I grew to love are not still telling me about their lives.

A heart stopping portrayal of one man’s determination to save the life of one other person. Just wonderful.
