Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi
4.0
Content warnings: mentions of torture, bombings, war, slut shaming
This was an emotional read for me. It talks about a girl growing up during the Islamic Revolution (of the late 70s/80s). I knew it happened but didn't quite realise how bad it was for Iranians.
It also gave me more reasons to really despise America (not that I needed more, I have enough as it is already). This is history that someone lived through translated into a graphic novel (and translated into English since it was originally written in French). And it's good.
It was a quick read for me but also a very hard topic to read about. I'm very glad that my library actually carried this in stock because of how much it was recommended to me to read (and how little our graphic novels/manga section is throughout the library system).
But just because it's in the form of a graphic novel shouldn't discourage you. Unless you have vision issues and can't find a large print version of this or an e-book version that you can enlarge so you can read. I very much enjoyed this book (which was apparently the first two books in one).
