Dangerous Ground by Josh Lanyon

2.0

Dangerous Ground started off fairly strong and then fizzled. Will Brandt and Taylor MacAllister have been friends and partners in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security for 3 years. Both gay men, they connected quickly, developed a friendship and working rapport. All went well until Taylor catches feelings for Will and suggests they act on a mutual attraction. Will doesn’t want to mess up their friendship and partnership; and frankly he’s more of a stable, reliable, relationship guy, whereas Taylor runs more towards the impulsive, commitment-shy, having “the mating instincts of a young gazelle” guy. (Mountain gazelles have a polygynandrous (promiscuous) mating system. This means that both males and females have multiple partners during each breeding season. You’re welcome.) Prior to the book starting Taylor gets shitfaced and pulls a “take me to bed, Will” and Will says “No”, and Taylor gets pissed and runs off all mavericky at work the next day and gets himself shot. Now things are weird between them. Will’s all over-protective and Taylor thinks it’s because he feels guilty about the shooting. Will suggests they take a camping trip to reconnect and work out their issues before going back to work post shooting.

Here’s where we join their journey. Will is still being solicitous and worried about Taylor who’s not entirely recovered, and Taylor thinks Will thinks he’s weak and he’s being pissy about it. He’s also not a camping enthusiast and is pissy about the fact that Will’s idea of a vacation seems to be visiting the ninth circle of hell (I can relate, also not being a camping enthusiast). Then just like that, they wander into a crime scene, and now it's all downed planes, dead pilots, piles of money and escaped criminals from the Black Wolf Casino robbery (who parachuted out of the plane).
The bad guys think Will and Taylor have the money and things get kind of dicey, but not before Will decides they should take advantage of the hot spring and “get it out of their system”. Taylor’s a little offended because he really has feelings for Will and wants more but he’s certainly not going to turn him down. Will and Taylor are okay together, but they do not light my fire. Then there's the second sex scene – when they’re both at least a day unbathed, sweaty, muddy, dirty and Taylor’s barfed…no thank you. I started out on the edge of my seat and wound up wanting to wrap things up already. There is nothing necessarily off putting about either Taylor or Will, but they don’t really grab me wither. 2 stars instead of 3 since I’m done.
