I wanted to read this book after having listened to the musical far too many times(Have not seen the musical besides bits and pieces on Youtube), and I wanted to know where the characters came from. Of course there are many similarities between the book and the musical. Reading the book definitely gave me some more context for the musical and an understanding of why the did certain things in the musical. I do favor the musical but I have had more time and more emotions attached to the musical.
