My Calamity Jane by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows

4.0

A new Lady Janies book! I was kind of skeptical of this because the Old West is not my "thing," but of course the Lady Janies made it fun and hilarious (and at times heartbreaking). I will add that I was very skeptical of the magic element in the book, which is werewolves. It felt really different from the other Lady Janies books that involved 1. people who could turn into animals (okay, now that I'm writing that does I realize it doesn't sound "really different" from werewolves), and 2. ghosts. I was extremely skeptical of the werewolves (garou), but it turned out to be a really interesting device and led to debates about morality and whether werewolves are inherently evil, etc. My favorite part of the book, though, was just the found family element--how Jane, Annie, Frank, and Bill (and George) help each other and others, often in spite of themselves. My other favorite part is all the anachronistic references. I realized while I was reading that there are a TON of references to the musical Annie Get Your Gun, so many at least read the list of songs before reading this book.
