We are the Wildcats is the story of a highschool girl’s varsity hockey team. It unfolds in the 24 hours before the first game of the season and is told from the perspective of six different players. Plenty of flashbacks are folded into the plot. What quickly becomes apparent to the reader is that Coach, who is beloved by the girls and seen as tough but only to get the best out of them, is in fact a manipulative, controlling, abusive, predatory, self-centred a$$hole. Sadly it takes the girls quite some time to put all the pieces together and realise just how wrong his behaviour is and how he has put his interests ahead of theirs. The ending is a cathartic delight - a triumph of team work and girl power. Although, I still wish they’d pummelled him their hockey sticks!
