In Shock: My Journey from Death to Recovery and the Redemptive Power of Hope by Rana Awdish
3.0
This book brought up a lot of emotions in me. As a physician, I disagree with many points made in the book. I am not discrediting this physician's experience at all and her perceptions of what went on around her care. But the generalized remarks about physicians are a part of the problem this book ironically highlights. We are not trained to be devoid of emotions or to be cool and centered and not feel. This thought is heavily dependent on where you are trained as well. I can say this because I have been trained both on the east coast and west coast. And let me tell you, two VERY different approaches to training. The generalized remarks really bothered me and is why so many patients do not trust physicians. We should always strive to be empathetic towards our patients and connect with them. You’d think it was common sense but unfortunately it is not. 3/5 stars because it was very well written and highlights so many important points, however, I cannot as a physician agree to many of those points to the extent they were expressed.
