This was a good romance book but I do think Rowan let it down a little for me. I liked the whole academic rivals vibe and the idea of Howl was a good setting to force Rowan and Neil together. However, Neil was a much better character than Rowan. He was generally really complex and had flaws but acknowledged them and tried to get better, and he had a really solid backstory. Rowan, on the other hand, fell a little flat for me. Characters who really romanticise everything and have their head in the clouds are quite irritating, and I didn’t like how forcefully she was addressing social issues because it just felt a little ridiculous and shoehorned in. I feel like it was difficult to see her as a well-rounded character because the only relationship she had was with Neil, and any others like her friendship with Kirby and Mara was explained in an info dump then skipped over. The romance in general was nice, but I wasn’t a massive fan of the plot twist (which I saw from a mile away) and how they said some downright cruel things to each other. But yeah, overall a decent book, but Neil carried. The only issue I had with him was the fact that he was called Neil.
