I first heard of this book and its author from the DVD extras of 'Cold Fish' a Japanese film based on the dog-lover Saitama murders. The book of the authors experiences at the Yomiura Shinbun and the stories he covered and the cost of those stories in life are a must read for anyone who wants to start romanticizing the 'floating world' of the Japanese sex industry and the yakuza.
I've not yet been to Japan and the book has not put me off going at all, but it has made me more keen to see the reality of the place and not the image i see through film and dramas and other aspects of the entertainment industry.
