Lilac by B.B. Reid

4.5

I hadn't read B.B. Reid before, but I will absolutely be making my way through her booklist after reading Lilac.

I loved Braxton from the jump. She is sassy, strong-willed, demanded respect, and refused to allow anyone make her feel inferior. Houston is the staunch leader. Loren is the charismatic flirt. Jericho (aka Rich) is the kind, quiet soul harboring a secret.

I'm a sucker for good witty banter and this book delivered. Braxton and the guys had no shortage of snarky comments thrown at each other, both when they hated each other and as their relationships developed.

This why-choose romance wasn't just about the romance or the music. It told a story of mending broken relationships, self-discovery, and embracing the family around you even if they aren't your family by blood. Each character has been broken in some way and had to go on the path to healing, both for themselves and for the sake of those they love.

B.B. Reid did a wonderful job of getting the reader to know each character and building the one-on-one relationships instead of jumping right into a group relationship, which none of them had ever done before. Too often I feel like why-choose books portray characters dividing to hop right into a group relationship, even when the characters have never experienced that dynamic before. Truly well done, B.B. Reid.

This book is long, but I still found myself hoping for more of Braxton, Houston, Loren and Jericho.

Tropes: enemies-to-lovers, why-choose/reverse harem, rockstar romance, found family
