i found i liked the writing in this a little better than the first book, and that the trade problem at the heart of this volume a little easier to understand (the value of items depreciating rapidly due to world events part, at least—but don’t quiz me about the loans and the paying back stuff, that’s beyond me). i really am surprised i’m so intrigued by a story whose plot is 100% motivated by a merchant’s trade, especially considering there’s a literal wolf spirit as the deuteragonist, but the fantasy elements playing a backseat to what is effectively, slice of life economics in a historically-inspired setting makes the series different than anything else i’ve ever read. the developing relationship between lawrence and holo is cute too, especially seeing them beginning to trust each other and grow closer.
