Venetia by Georgette Heyer

There is so much going for this romance--a beautiful heroine who is intelligent, a rakish, cynical hero who reads--the bookish brother whose acerb wit makes a great third. But in some of her later books Heyer gets heavy handed with the Mrs. Norris or Lady Catherine type figure, and keeps them onstage for really unpleasant scenes far too long. So it is with the Evil Mother-in-law here. When she's not on stage being Eeeevile, the romance is great, and the ending is extra fun when Venetia sets out to . . . well, no spoilers. I'd give this five stars whenever the Evil Mother in Law is not on stage, and two stars during those tedious scenes.
