I think I would have rated this higher had I read the book instead of listened. The most tragic moments felt flat, but I think that is due to the narration. The prose, especially when centered on nature and wilderness, is beautiful and I loved the use of peaches and river as subject and metaphor in this sad tale of womanhood, family, prejudice, and grief.
