Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun by Tọlá Okogwu

3.0

Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun is a short middle-grade fantasy about a young girl who discovers she is Solari - a group of Nigerian superheroes with magical powers.

I liked Onyeka’s personality a lot, and also appreciated Cheyenne and Adanna. I loved the representation of chronic illness/medical conditions, with Cheyenne having Turner’s Syndrome and another character having Synesthesia. The writing was well-paced, and I liked the Nigerian culture infused in the story.

Unfortunately, though, I found it a little boring, hence the rating. That being said, though, it may just not be the book for me — there’s nothing wrong with it, and I’m disappointed I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I still recommend it to young readers, fantasy-lovers, or anyone who wants a story with Nigerian main characters!
