Call It Courage by Armstrong Sperry

Eh, definitely a book of it's time. And despite the specifics of setting this among a Polynesian culture, it's very much a "huntin' shootin' and fishin'" book that could have any number of interchangeable white protagonists in any mid-century "boy's" narrative.

Moana does a similar narrative many times better, imo.
