The Journey of Ibn Fattouma by Naguib Mahfouz

4.0

Being a huge fan of Mahfouz,I found this living up to my expectations. Mahfouz's style of writing is as always graceful and elegant encompassing the moral and philosophical themes that he is renowned to explore in his works. One quite intriguing aspect of this parable is Mahfouz's subtle astute critique of various forms of governance from Islamic way of administration to socialism through feudalism by taking examples from each city Quindil, the protagonist visits. Characterisation is yet again classic Mahfouz where the inner strengths and weakness, struggles and triumphs of the protagonist are highlighted with a touch of empathy.
