Invisible Emmie by Terri Libenson

4.0

The story alternates between two different graphic formats. One is less colorful, but shows the vibrant inner mind of a quiet, anxious girl. The other story thread is full of bold color, simple text, and a popular character who blithely and effortlessly moves through life. At first I wanted to hate this popular girl, but she's not mean. Just really, really fortunate. And then I waited for reality to kick in for her, which it did, but very much not how I expected.

Emmie, the quiet, anxious artist who has trouble making friends and speaking up for herself is a glorious everyhero.
