The Sandman: Overture: The Deluxe Edition by Neil Gaiman

4.0

This was my introduction to the Sandman series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I've only read one of Gaiman's novels (The Ocean at the End of the Lane) and LOVED it, so I was very excited to see what his writing could do in what is becoming my favorite literary format- the comic / graphic novel. I was so pleased with this story, and I can't wait to pick up the older issues of Sandman.

However, the best parts of Overture are the artwork, coloring, and lettering. After I finished the actual story, I had to read all of the bonus content to get an idea for how the artists developed each page. I've never seen comic art this psychedelic and beautiful. Sometimes I had to just lay the book out and let my eyes wander over the page to pick up every last face and symbol and color.

All in all, this comic deserves five stars. Easily.
