“Pain doesn’t go away—it just takes on fresh forms. Lingers like a ghost, tethered to a place irreparably familiar as it changes. And when it has starved its new form, it changes again. And it will keep changing until it has eaten through everything and left the sufferer a husk.
A phantom.”

Eerie, poetic and beautiful writing about Animism, indigenous folk lore, grief, and friendship in an isolated winter wilderness. There’s a creeping dread from page one.
The ending had me tearing up! Oh my heart. I’m shocked this is a debut and I’m excited to read his other book The Dark Roux!
