Definitely very evident that this was Herbert's first attempt at writing a book. The gore is still pretty good though, which I think is the main draw of this book. That being said, some of the most shocking content in this book comes not from the gore but rather outdated stereotypes and views. I'm normally fine with that sort of stuff but for some reason in this book it just seems more uncomfortable somehow.
