El Sur by Thomas G. Deveny, Adelaida García Morales

I recently saw the film El Sur for the first time thanks to the library having a copy of the DVD, and luckily for me the Criterion edition came with a copy of the novella in the case. This crisp translation reveals lovely prose, written much as though the protagonist were speaking to her dead father. It's much more melancholy than I expected, but this isn't me knocking it. Overall this is a solid novella that is well worth reading for anyone looking for a coming of age story that's sad and contemplative.
