This was an absolute MASTERPIECE.

If you are on the fence about this book, NO YOU ARE NOT. Bump it up your TBR to #1. Better yet, stop what you're doing and go buy this. Go to the library. Go to libby. Go wherever this is available and inhale the magic that is this book.

It is phenomenal from start to finish. The writing is immaculate and scenic. Dark and spooky and poetic; you will be engulfed in Ms. Gillig's storytelling. The dialogue is witty and sharp and every word is chosen with intent.

The magic system and lore are unique and mysterious. It is plot heavy, but the characters did not suffer because of it. The MCs as well as the side characters only enhanced the story. The side characters that did not get a lot of "page time" were impactful in their brisk appearance and sets up a lot that could happen in the second book. I think the chemistry between the FMC and MMC is sweet and authentic that you want to root for them as a couple but also individually. There is very mild spice (mentioned briefly on page, fade to black) but the slow burnis where it's at!!!

There are a lot of OMG and LOL moments as well as fight scenes (that got a little intense tbh) that had me turning the pages so fast. I feel like there was never a dull moment.

I devoured this fully and wholeheartedly and already knew as I was reading it that I was going to reread this over and over again. I am dying for the sequel.
