miller montgomery and kai rhodes (& max)

if you know me, you know i’m a goner for books with cute kids
and let me tell you, this one DELIVERED.
it was such a sweet read, couldn’t recommend more!

“We’re calling them the Max and Miller cookie. The M& M cookie. Sorry, Baseball Daddy, but you’re out on this one.” “Actually, I’m also an ‘M’. My full name is Malakai, so I guess I count too.” “Your name is Malakai?” I nod. “Malakai Rhodes,” she says, as if she were testing the way it feels on her tongue. “That’s a good name.”

-

When the time comes, I want it to be hard for Miller to leave and not just because I’ve enjoyed having her here, but because it’s one of the most important parts of life. Finding people that make your heart ache when they’re not around. Having a place to call home.

-

His smile is the first one to bloom when he catches me walking down the hall towards them, but when Max sees me, his facial expression lifts and mirrors his dad. My lungs clutch at the sight. This is what I’m confused about. Why does the image of those two make my heart scream mine?

-

“Mmm . . . Mama.” Miller’s face falls. “What did you say?” “Mama.” Max grins, so proud of himself for saying a name I now realize he’s been trying to say for weeks. “Mama! Mama!”

-

“Because when life or work gets too stressful, too overwhelming for me, I’m able to see who matters most. And that’s you, Miller.”

-

“How does it feel to know you’re settling down?” I asked. “I don’t like the term ‘settling down.’ I didn’t settle for anything. I simply stopped running when the two best boys I know caught me.”
