The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

2.0

Though this book receives high praise I have to say I did not enjoy it. Hosseini throws in every possible tragedy from suicide to rape to infertility, often being unnecessarily (in my opinion) graphic in his depiction of certain violent/upsetting scenes. Consequently he waters down and distracts from what should be the main focus of the book (The effects of race division and war in Afghanistan). As well as this the one somewhat developed female character soraya serves no more purpose than to add to Amirs self pitying and guilt, as all the other women she acts as a mere plot device.
