Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
4.0
Yes, I also fell into Booktok's hold. R.F. Kuang has been recommended to me a thousand and one times. Additionally, I just finished my book publishing master's. Therefore, this book was an obvious pick to start with.
If you think you know how the plot is going to develop... no you don't. This read had me hooked in the weirdest way possible. I felt so much curiosity for a character I did not like, and she kept me reeled in. Unlikable main characters have become the IT girls for contemporary fiction, and tbh I get why. Reading about someone mean, someone bad, someone unethical feels compelling. You aren't rooting for them, but you want to know how their story, their drama, ends.
'Yellowface' starts being a satire. Along the way it becomes a psychological thriller. I'm actually not sure when this switch happened, but the fact that I can't pinpoint it, makes me believe excellent writing is involved. The only reason why this book didn't get 5 stars from me, is because the plot seemed a bit banal compared to what I thought it was going to be. Maybe 'the hype' influenced my final opinion of the book, but I still think it's a great novel to read.
Would definitely recommend.
