Nightingale Wood by Stella Gibbons

funny lighthearted

3.0

Stella Gibbons is best known for writing Cold Comfort Farm. This has much of the same quirkiness, absurdity, and gently rude sense of humor. If you are into the foibles of Brits between the world wars and want women characters in the foreground, you might enjoy this. Think Wodehouse but less predictable or Waugh with less meanness (though also less beauty). There are some genuinely ungainly sentences along the way and it might be better at 300 pages than 387. Overall, enjoyable enough.
