Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

I didn't have much in the way of expectations for this book but it definitely surprised me. Hex Hall follows Sophie Mercer after she's sentenced to Hex Hall, a reform school for wayward witches, warlocks, faeries, and werewolves. As someone who was raised by a human mother, Sophie's a little out of sorts with the whole arrangement, what with her estranged warlock father, her vampire roommate, and the coven of w(b)itches who are trying to recruit her. Throw in a hot love interest, a series of mysterious murders, and some nasty ghosts and things really start to get interesting.
I was not expecting to enjoy this so much. I wound up reading it in two sittings, in between which, I bought the sequel. I should have picked up the last two books...
Rachel Hawkin's writing is hilarious, and reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, minus the copious puns. The characters are entertaining, although some of the school kids blend into the background, and the plots have quite a bit going on. I'm tempted to lump this into the fluffy paranormal fantasy category since it's such easy reading and was overall very entertaining, but there was a considerable amount of plot and mystery going on that gave it a lot more substance than I was anticipating. I also didn't predict several of the end twists, which was a nice change, since they tend to stand out a hundred pages away in more fluffy reads.
Overall, I highly recommend this for people looking to delve into paranormal fantasy, or ya. It's easy but worthwhile reading. Definitely can't wait to continue the series.
